ROYSTON DRENTHE is a passionate footballer who can dribble, pass and tackle.
As we saw in the Under-20 tournament, the dreadlocked left-winger has the same never-say-die spirit as Archie Gemmill and Edgar Davids.
Drenthe scored against Liverpool in the final of the Rotterdam Tournament on Sunday night, arriving at the far post to knock in a rebound off the near post after Slory left Riise for dead on the right flank
When the score was 0-0, Kuyt hit the underside with a thunderous 20 yarder which bounced down behind the line. The move was so quick, the shot so hard, the rebound so fast, that the linesman had no chance of seeing whether the shot went in. It was more than a foot over the line but violent backspin caused the ball to fly up and out of the goal.
Stevie G sometimes looks like a Rolls Royce midfielder and in 87 he cruised through on the left, took a nice little pass from Ryan Babel, and steered a left foot shot under the keeper from a narrow angle for 1-1. A sweet, classy goal, quite delicious. Much tastier than the workmanlike huff-and-puff that went before.
Then Gerrard spoiled it a bit during a late melee, when his slap caught Lucius. A short, sneaky left-handed slap but, to his eternal credit, the winger didn’t go down squealing and holding his kisser !
Giovanni van Bronckhorst had a good game in left central midfield.
Will Drenthe come to the Premiership?
Yes !
When?
I wish I knew.
