Good draw!

Personally, I like the Champions League but preferred the European Cup where proper league Champions played each other twice.

Still, I always have bets on Matchday 1 and 2 and 3 and win quite often.

But I never gamble on Matchday 4 or 5 or 6 because most Groups are taking shape by then, so managers might not pick their strongest elevens.

On Matchday 3, Spurs had put down a marker in the Bernabeu by scoring first against holders Real Madrid. Ronaldo equalised with a penalty just before half-time and it finished 1-1.

Some neutrals would have noted that result and the Tottenham performance.

Maribor had lost 0-7 at home to Liverpool while Man City had beaten Napoli 2-1.

Chelsea 3 Roma 3 told us that Conte now relies on Eden Hazard.

David Luiz had scored the first goal, Hazard made it 2-0, Kolarov got a goal for 2-1 three minutes later. Dzeko netted for 2-2 and again for 2-3. Then Hazard levelled it again.

Two very good teams but both had conceded three goals. Could Roma or Chelsea win the Champions League? Would either of them get to the semi-final?

On Matchday 4, Dele Alli took Real Madrid apart.

He scored twice at Wembley, Eriksen made it 3-0 in 65, and Ronaldo’s reply in 80 minutes was too late to be relevant.

That game was never close and Tottenham 3 Real Madrid 1 was duly noted by Europe’s glamour clubs.

On Matchday 5, Sevilla 3 Liverpool 3 was a game where the visitors had led 3-0 at half-time.

I was wrong about Napoli in Group F. They lost four of their six games, including a 0-2 defeat by Feyenoord or Matchday 6.

So Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester City went through with 12 and 15 points respectively.
