Well, I’m hearing all the Schwarzer/Almunia/Friedel triangle rumors.
I like Schwarzer. Solid keeper, but is he really the right one? I was much more excited about the Lloris rumors. Seems like a better, world class investment.
Myles replies :
Lloris might struggle in the combative EPL. He looks a good player in France.
Better to sign a keeper from within the league. Seriously, I really don’t think Arsenal should develop goalkeepers. Trophy-winning teams cannot do that because they need to win most of their games. You cannot “blood” goalkeepers by popping them in and out of your first team, as you might with an outfield player. You can loan them out to small clubs like Brentford
For me, a manager who is unable to teach defence has to sign defenders and goalkeepers who can do the job. That’s logical, surely? It’s obvious. Lehmann could do the job.Vermaelen was much younger but he can do the job too.
How on earth has Almunia played 160 games for Arsenal’s first team?
What other PL manager would give that clown 160 games? Almunia has always been a joke, even though he improved from incompetence to competence.
After three years of the joke called Almunia, Wenger has at last owned up and apparently agreed terms with a big Australian keeper who will be 38 in October. Fulham want £4 million for him.
New manager Mark Hughes wants the fans to see him trying to keep one of their favourite players. Hughes is talking about surpassing what Roy Hodgson achieved at Fulham, so he can’t sell Schwarzer until he finds a replacement of similar calibre.
But if Schwarzer was the answer, why not sign him a year ago?
Did Schwarzer ever dream of joining such a big club at this late stage of his career? Was Arsenal on his radar a year ago?
Will Schwarzer play for Arsenal at Anfield? The game is on Sunday and this is Thursday night. Will he sign before then? Arsenal will need a proper keeper against Liverpool, especially if Fabregas does not play.
