Without Berahino & Stones, Under-21s lose 1-0 to Portugal

Warned last week that any bunch of 20-year-old Portuguese footballers is hard to beat.

Dismayed when I saw that Berahino and John Stones were out injured.

Those two have Premier League experience, so they’ve played against full internationals every week.

The West Brom striker suffered a a knee injury in England’s final training session that put him out of the tournament.

John Stones had suspected concussion.

The only goal last night was by Sporting midfielder João Mário just before the hour.

A very jammy goal involving a deflection and a shot and another deflection that broke to the unmarked midfielder.

This lad is 22 and has 77 caps at youth level and three senior appearances as a sub , including one in Paris when France beat Portugal 2-1. João Mário was brought down in the box by Paul Pogba and Quaresma converted the pen. Benzema and Pogba had scored before that.

Sounds like Harry Kane hardly got a kick.

Sporting Lisbon anchorman William Carvalho had a blinder, apparently.

England needed to win that game. If not, at least draw it.

Their second game  in Czech Republic is Sweden.

Are you interested? No.

Am I interested? Only if we win it.
