Willian knew David Luiz was gonna smash that free kick

I always go for the player who places the ball.

He puts the ball down very carefully because he plans to hit the ball in a certain way, as he’s practiced half a million times.

The dribbling Eden Hazard had cutely mugged Adam Lallana by running across him to ensure contact, then falling flat on his face and winning that free-kick.

Willian placed that ball and we know that he takes a good free-kick.

He didn’t look at Luiz and Luiz didn’t appear to speak to him to say, “Let me take it.”

But, if  you look at the replay, Willian wasn’t surprised that David Luiz ran past him and whacked the free-kick past Mignolet, who was still organising his wall.

A phenomenal dead ball kick from 25 yards that kissed the inside of the post.

Gordon Banks could have not have saved it – and neither could Peter Schmeichel.

0-1 in 24 minutes and it stayed that way for almost half an hour.

When Jordan Henderson hit a superb first time cross from right to left, the crafty Milner stole in and headed the ball across the box and Moses tried to clear and the ball glanced off his head to Wijnaldum, who butted down and in for 1-1 in 57 minutes..

When Diego Costa foxed Matip in the box, and fell over the defender’s foot, a penalty was correctly given. As I said about four years ago, when Costa was splaying for Atletico Madrid, this guy’s got more ways of falling over your boot than any footballer I’ve ever seen.

Costa took the pen himself….and Mignolet saved!

When sub Sadio Mane picked out Firmino, he headed into the gloves of Courtois.

That was Firmino’s second bad miss.

I was really loving the battle, a fascinating contest, and I’d backed Chelsea after the kick-off.

But Liverpool contained them quite well and might have nicked it.

For Klopp this was a six-pointer and a 1-1 draw was… an OK result.

Luckily, I won my other bet at generous odds when  Burnley beat Leicester 1-0 with a late handball goal by sub Sam Vokes.

FULL DISCLOSURE : I was picking Leicester to lose as much as Burnley to win.
