What if Arsenal were playing Liverpool for Wenger’s job tonight?

It’s become very simple : Arsenal’s biggest problem is Wenger.

Thousands of Gooners now agree with what I’ve been writing for the last three years.

Wenger thinks he is unsackable. Right now, he is unsackable.

His departure has to be well-orchestrated to allow him a graceful exit with some dignity.

The Arsenal board can only improve the team by hiring another manager.

This manager will not improve the team. He will only buy more of the same and do more of the same.

He’s been linked with Remy and Chamakh in France and they are the same as what Arsenal have now. After a year or two here, Remy and Chamakh will be as bad as Clichy and Nasri are now. When they settle in they will quickly become what Arsenal already have.

All managers lose the plot – and this one’s no different.

He knows Almunia is hopeless and gormless but he can’t drop him. He has to play him. He can’t drop him because he’s got nobody else.

He has drawn 0-0 at Villa, been hammered 3-1 at home by Man United , and lost 2-0 at Chelsea, but what could he do to change his team between Sunday and Wednesday night?

A radio journalist emailed me yesterday.

I came home from the gym to find him asking what I thought of the Chelsea game. Well, I expected Chelsea to score an early goal in 10 minutes but Drogba netted in 7. Drogba produced two thunderously decisive moments, as he does in big games.

Then my gambling pal Tony phoned.

“As soon as I saw Walcott was playing, I backed Chelsea,” he said.

“So did I, ” I replied.

Wenger put Walcott up against the best left back in the world.

He put a confused kid, who has lost whatever he had at Southampton, against the superfast, in-your-face Ashley Cole. How ridiculous was that?

CEO Ivan Gazidis has just hired a new marketing team but Wenger will not give them anything to work with.

He says that the Carling Cup is nothing, I don’t want it. He chucked it 5-0 at Spurs, he chucked the FA Cup 4-0 at Old Trafford and he chucked the FA Cup again at Stoke. Fans pay full price for the FA Cup games at home, so he waits for an away draw every year and then chucks it.

This team can’t win the Champions League. Not now, not ever. Fabregas knows that and he has had enough.

His face, his body language, tell the story

Arsenal could win the FA Cup but their snobbish manager is above that competition.

Wenger needs a reality check and maybe Porto will give it to him.

If Porto knock Wenger out, he should apologise and resign.

Expect two very close games against Porto.

Tonight, Liverpool will defend well.

Liverpool have defended very well recently. The only thing they can’t defend well against is crosses. And Arsenal don’t score from crosses because they don’t practice crosses and don’t know how to get on the end of crosses.

Arsenal is a French team that is too modern to do anytthing as basic as that, as old-fashioned as that.
