From Stuart Laws :
I don’t like 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 either.
But with everyone else playing it, you’d get over-run playing 4-4-2, just as ManU were for 30 mins by us on Sunday.
You could get away with it if you had Vieira and Petit…two fit powerhouse warriors.
But they don’t seem to exist. Yaya Toure, for all his skill and power, only has half their energy and can’t play in a 2. I like a midfield of Ramsey in the Arteta role next to Wishere, and Corzola in front.
Ramsey creates little, but is strong and 6ft, he could learn the defensive keep-ball role.
Don’t like Arteta and Ramsey doing same job. It’s like 2 Ray Wilkins!
With 3 forwards, you can get away with cheaper half-forwards and a lump down the middle, hitting 10 goals between them.
4-4-2 is OK for a perfect team with class players in each position.
4-5-1 is a formation used when your players are not good enough.
A team that needs a defensive midfielder and extra man in there coz you can’t find 2 good enough to do it on their own – ditto the forward line…3 where you can’t find a two.
Fill the dangerous middle space on the pitch.
Myles:
An incisive intelligence like yours is wasted in a comfort zone in East Anglia, Stuart.
It’s time to step up.You should apply for Wenger’s job.
