Last Friday I was going to write a piece here titled : Please, Arsene, buy a centre half.
But I didn’t think he would, so I wrote something else.
On Monday morning, out of the blue, came the amazing news that he was in for Middlesbrough’s Jonathan Woodgate, who was about to sign for Spurs.
Woody, 28, is a fantastic defender when fit and playing well. Very fast, very skilful, great in the air, able to cruise forward and use the ball.
Last year I was always saying that Arsenal needed a six foot four centreback like Samba or Vidic, somebody dominating.
This piece by the excellent Phil Shaw tells you all about Woody’s background.
Another must-read is Tim Rich’s From village idiot to galactico – a journey to confound sceptics.
UPDATE: Woodgate had a medical at Tottenham today and has agreed to sign a three and a half year contract. The fee could rise to £7.5 million.
1.20 pm : AW has now denied he was interested in Woodgate.
