From Steve Paul : A funny thing?!
Hi Myles,
Loving the blog but just thought I would ask your opinion on something.
Another Arsenal blogger has been getting himself in a twist about RVP and so called ‘dis-loyalty’ etc.
Now my opinion on the matter has been one of – Great player, one good season and a few good memories but if we get 15-20 Mil for him …. brilliant.
However, the same blogger mentioned that he would rather RvP went abroad than we have to suffer seeing him in a Man City or United shirt etc
Now I hadn’t really thought about this, as I didn’t really see it as an issue.
When I though about it a little more I could imagine myself going wild over the thought of PV4 or RP7 or TA6 doing such a thing.
RvP in my mind does represent the final player from that amazing era, bought just after the Invincibles when fans were expecting even more amazing things.
I am confused about my indifference.
Have I just grown up a bit or has football changed so much that we just don’t bat an eyelid at this sort of thing or have I just lost my belief in Arsenal as an ambitious winning club?
I look at this team and couldn’t care a less if any of them went to Utd, Chelsea, Spurs etc!
Myles says :
Footballers have always changed clubs, even within the same city.
More than a third of ANR correspondents say : Let RVP go, sell him, he can f*ck off.
The future of this season’s EPL is unknowable and unguessable till sometime after October.
Don’t worry about your indifference. If Arsenal go unbeaten in their first 10 games, your enthusiasm will come back.
An ambitious club signs stars their fans want to see in the shirt.
But Wenger would rather grow his own team, spending cash from the sale of stars he has created, finishing third in everything to keep his status/unique power/ £8m salary.
Footballers may change their shirts and boots but leopards don’t change their spots.
Fabregas left Wenger, now RVP is leaving Wenger.
They wanted to win trophies. That is what the game if all about.
Both men knew they would win zero with AW.
I don’t blame them for going.
