Does Wenger seriously believe that he and his players can raise their salaries year after year with no added requirements attached?
Does he seriously expect fans to shell out more and more, meekly complying with the diet of having favourable FA Cup draws, being thrashed by Bayern and being overtaken by Tottenham without them crying ‘WTF is going on?’
Part of being a football player or manager is handling hostility. Performing in tough situations. Not capitulating.
Since 2006, Arsenal have failed in that aspect of performing. Not always but far too often.
Let us suppose Daniel Levy has a brain and ups Dele’s salary to £90k a week before pre-season starts.
That will be a >50% pay rise and not bad for someone just turned 21. It is not the market rate, but shows the player he can move into serious pay grades before he is 25, provided he keeps performing.
That is still less than the mercurial Oxlade is demanding not to jump ship to Liverpool, despite Dele having shown his competitor a clean pair of heels where performing is concerned. Arsenal increase wages when players play the system, not when they perform for a season or two at levels justifying a rise.
This pisses true fans off….and shows the market Wenger operates in.
Fans who understand basic economics know that cash is a liquidity buffer, not a hedge against inflation.
I do not care if Uk inflation is 2% if inflation in purchase price + salary of top footballers is 15-30%. It is economic lunacy to hold cash beyond a suitable safety buffer rather than invest in talent if returns on cash per annum are 10% of the inflation rate of top footballers. Perhaps the economics professor should have his exam paper downgraded? This pisses off fans as well….
Fans who look at the size of the squad and the utilisation of players get pissed off when Wenger spends £200k+ a week on players he will not play on a regular basis.
Players should not earn more than £10k a week for less than 15 starts a season, unless they are adding value in other ways. You cannot claim tiredness as an excuse if you have undercooked squad members sitting idle.
Any Arsenal squad member who cannot be relied on to play and beat bottom 8 opponents, non EPL opponents in cups etc should be sold to EFL clubs posthaste.
They are a waste of money, a waste of space and a disgrace to sporting values. If they are capable but Wenger refuses to play them, fans will get pissed off. If Wenger does not have back room staff modelling schedules for players to optimise rests, cumulative loading to minimise injuries etc, he is a dinosaur. Fans do not want a dinosaur as manager.
