Liverpool 3 Paris Saint-Germain 2
Since 1961!
Liverpool have won their first six games for the first time since 1961.
Laidback leader Virgil reckons that they took their Premier League momentum into their first Champions League fixture.
After watching Inter Milan 2 Spurs 1, I enjoyed the rocking entertainment from Anfield.
Expected Liverpool to beat PSG because most of their French league games are a walkover compared to Liverpool’s Premier League matches. It’s hard to switch up to a different level in midweek.
Jurgen Klopp loves to seize the initiative. I was giggling quietly in the gym café on Tuesday morning when I read his comments in the Mirror.
Klopp had told his friend Thomas Tuchel: My front three are better than your front three.
That’s a big statement when their trio is Neymar-Cavani-Mbappe.
When I read that I thought. “He likes to attack when the other team have the ball. Now he’s attacking the day before the match!”
When a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross from the right flank didn’t work, raiding left back Robertson fastened onto the ball swiftly and crossed beautifully from the left and Daniel Sturridge sent a bullet header past keeper in 30 minutes
1-0 after 30 minutes.
Then Liverpool got a penalty after a very silly challenge on Wijnaldum and veteran warrior James Milner side-footed beautifully into the bottom corner for 2-0 in 36 and Anfield was flying.
But when Cavani couldn’t connect with a Di Maria cross, the bouncing ball rebounded off Robertson’s leg and right back Thomas Meunier took half a step backwards and buried a left foot shot inside the post for 2-1 in 40. You won’t see a tidier goal by a full back between now and the start of November.
It was 2-1 at half-time.
Sturridge mistimed a header that could have been 3-1.
Then, when Salah misplaced a pass, Neymar knifed forward at Olympic speed towards the box and found Mbappe, a Paris boy,who snapped up the chance to make it 2-2 in 83.
Then sub Firmino, on for Sturridge, changed feet on the right side of the box and smashed home the winner in 90+1.
Drama? You could say that.
The old blogger was happy enough.
I’d backed Liverpool/Over 2.5 goals.
Klopp said: “It was really important that we started the game as we did. They changed the system a little, bringing Neymar on to the left wing and playing Di Maria in the half-space. Not a bad idea. You had to really keep your focus. But we did really well, covered a lot of yards and closed all the spaces … and we used the right wing – Neymar is a world class player but he’s not a defender so we tried to use that.”
