From Michael Goodacre : Gazidis interview explodes myth of the Arsenal/Wenger austerity years
Hi Myles,
Arsenal and Wenger got it so wrong 2004-2013.
Applying housewife economics to football which exists in a unique “virtuous” bubble was not only self defeating in terms of competing but unneccessarily onerous upon the fans.
Untruthful and snobbish also.
Abramovich was the convenient “new money” and ideological bogey man, but he’s no mug.
He knew Chelsea would eventually become self-sustaining.
And now he himself has willingly joined in with the old money protection racket called FFP.
Arsenal were never in danger of extinction because of debt. The club with a new stadium already built would have been snapped up had things gone wrong.
Ah well! Some directors made a handsome profit for the family, if not for themselves, by keeping costs down and then selling out.
