From Bob Torrent : U21s
HI Myles,
Why is it that we constantly apologise for England’s quality of football by suggesting there aren’t enough opportunities in the EPL?
How many of the Swedish starting 11 play in the EPL? Answer : none.
How many of those players play in the Swedish 1st division? Answer : 3.
How many of the English starting 11 from last night played in the EPL last year? Answer: 6.
Sweden beat Italy and qualify while England get beaten 3-1 and look as though their football hasn’t moved on since Glenn Hoddle was a young man.
What’s the FA solution? Introduce quotas.
So now the EPL clubs will be forced to pick players from a pool that clearly aren’t good enough to play for the U21s.
While countries like Sweden will continue to send their players to clubs such as Benfica, Beşiktaş, PSV and Bordeaux, where they will get paid a lot less than loan players at Derby and Reading.
Myles says:
Footballers are in it for the money and most of the talk in dressing rooms is about wages.
When football sold its soul to Sky in 1992, there was a volcanic eruption of £££££ in the Premier League.
Some thought it was insane and unsustainable and told me that the bubble would burst but I always thought the bubble would get bigger and bigger and not go POP! in my lifetime.
Almost every decent player in the Dutch League would love a move to England.
Sweden too, I reckon.
NO MYSTERY!!!
We simply don’t produce enough good players or good coaches.
And hundreds of our most gifted footballers are too dim to handle big money at such a young age.
So they stop improving and fade away and sit around wondering how Andrea Pirlo can be playing in a European Cup Final against Barcelona at the age of 36.
