From Dec: managing expectations
Before a ball has been kicked in this year’s CL campaign AW in today’s Guardian:
“The drive to win this tournament is immense but I am long enough in the game to be realistic. Let’s put the hard work in. We are ambitious but we are not dreamers.”
I thought football was ALL about dreaming.
Myles says:
Wenger is a practical polymath who used knowledge from outside football to make his name in England.
The Professor won trophies in style after he inherited the best back five in Europe, and Bergkamp, when he arrived in 1996.
But now, 19 years later, the staleness of the ArseneSilentStan Corporation has started to seep into the bones of 60% of Arsenal supporters, who have been grumbling about Groundhog Day for the last eight years.
We’re all fed up and the guy who once said he couldn’t imagine retiring till he won his Holy Grail, the Champions League, has recently started moaning that “other people have money too.”
Oh dear! What a pathetic bleat that was.
And soon after that he changes his tune and says, “We are not dreamers.”
That’s code for: If I finish third, I’ve delivered my budget. And earned my £11.5 million salary.
Again.
