Arsenal’s earnings/ Pareto/ Gallas/ Reyes/ Clichy

Arsenal earned £44.14m from TV money and cash prizes in the season which has just finished.

They are behind the first three in the Premiership – Man U £62.93m, Chelsea £60m+, and Liverpool £54.7m +£2m if they win in Athens.

Fifth placed Spurs earned £30.55m – illustrating that despite the number of games the UEFA Cup is not a money spinner. And the importance of being in the top four.

There seems to be a common theme among the press to see one different club break into the top four. What they don't want is 16 clubs beeing feeder clubs for four. So with Liverpool splashing out, Arsenal are the most vulnerable to what would be a 'popular change'.

On Sky Sports' Hold the Back Page, Shaun Custis thought Arsenal youngsters would need another season, and next year will come too soon for them to challenge the top two. The panel agreed that much would depend on the striker Arsenal bring in, if they bring one in at all.

At least Wenger IS looking for new players: "I'm looking for new signings but I'm also at the moment happy with the players I have and focused on developing the team I have. I feel the team is growing well. The biggest transfer I can make is to try to get everybody fit by the start of next season.

"If I manage that I have done 80 per cent of the job and I will be pleased. The other 20 per cent is optional – whether I buy or not." Pareto's law – or Pareto's law in reverse?

Wenger confirmed that William Gallas is staying. "I feel we'll see the best of William next year – a different Gallas. He had a lot of injuries and only now is he getting back to his best." Jose Mourinho admitted making a mistake in allowing defenders William Gallas and Robert Huth to leave Stamford Bridge.

The Mirror says Baptista will return after his loan spell to Real, who want £18m.

And also that Atletico Madrid have expressed an interest in misfit Reyes and Arsenal hope to get £8m.

Wenger said: "I think Reyes had some fantastic games for us, especially at Highbury, and he contributed a lot. In the north, away from home, it's more difficult. He was kicked a lot, was more destroyed and that's where he lost a little of his taste for the English game." [most notably the head of the player's union]

When he first came, the paper compared him favourably with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Meanwhile, Watford want to sign Arsenal keeper Lukasz Fabianski on a year's loan as replacement for Ben Foster.

Charles N'Zogbia is linked with Arsenal again in the Guardian.

And finally, The Guardian has their football writers on the best match of the season – with Arsenal in three [two v Man U at the Emirates – Matt Scott and Steve Claridge – who also had RVP's at Charlton, as goal of the season] and one away to Chelsea [Richard Williams]. Williams has Arsenal's 6-2 against Blackburn as the best team performance, while Vik Akers was David Pleat's unung hero, and Gael Clichy was Matt Scott's.

Certainly Gael Clichy, besides Fabregas, was the outstanding player in the latter part of the season.
