Charlton chairman Richard Murray said that Charlton have had their eyes on Jeffers for a while – including last season and in pre-season.
Murray emphasised that Jeffers is an England international and worth £9.5m two seasons ago and that he couldn’t get a starting place due to players like Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.
Wenger bought Jeffers to be the “fox in the box”, but an ankle injury and poor form didn’t help. Clearly lacking in confidence, he was sent off against Manchester United in the Charity Shield, last season, and was farmed out to Everton. Helping with the equaliser against Arsenal, and celebrating overtly, didn’t endear him to Arsenal fans. A row with David Moyes meant a return to Highbury in June.
Arsenal have now lost four forwards since the end of last season (including Aliadiere in the short term), and with only van Persie and Pennant returning, need replacements.
The latest to be linked is Valencia’s Angulo, who according to his agent has turned down Valencia’s contract offer and has an offer from Arsenal.
