From San Elan : Only a theory
Myles,
I would like to offer a theory:
Wenger has known for many years that he can no longer cut the mustard, that he could neither win the PL nor the CL.
Therefore he wouldn’t buy any top players because that would expose him as a confirmed failure and his spins would no longer work!
This year being possibly his last, he has decided to expose himself a bit. He has spent the money, but when he fails, he walks saying I’ve done my best. If he succeeds by chance (FA Cup, perhaps) he takes another contract.
As I said, only a theory.
Myles says:
The FA Cup is only six matches, San.
Agree that Wenger’s main aim is to renew and rule and keep his power & £11.5m salary.
He thinks we’d be lost without him.
From Neil McCarthy : Common coaching themes
Hi Myles,
I thought this piece in The Guardian might resonate with some of your readers:
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2016/nov/22/jeff-fisher-los-angeles-rams-coaching-record-nfl
‘While some pin Fisher’s continued employment on bumbling Rams owner Stan Kroenke not knowing any better, Fisher isn’t simply the benefactor of good luck. He’s playing failure chess, setting up future undeserved paychecks far in advance.’
Myles says:
Thanks, Neil.
A new contract for Jeff Fisher is a vote for a guy with a proven record in selling the future.
But I won’t compare Jeff to Arsene, who is a polymath who has done brilliant club-building things that no other coach could have done or will ever do.
