Subject: thought you might find this funny

Myles,

Regarding your recent article on Jack Wilshere. I thought you might be interested in how some people are taking it.

I was delighted to see how many folks are thick enough not to see the obvious humour in your last couple of paragraphs.

Keep up the good work. While I don’t always agree with your opinions, I appreciate your analysis and willingness to go out on a limb with your assertions.

Thanks, Scott, it’s people like you that I write for.

The paragraphs in question were dubious, a near-miss, which often happens when I’m typing through a fog of fatigue around midnight. Comic writing is quite difficult and should not be attempted on a whim by a weary old beatnik flying off at a tangent two hours after he should have stumbled off to bed. It’s an interesting challenge, though, and I used to get quite giggly and intoxicated when I wrote for Punch in the Seventies. Miles Kington once invited me to play cricket for Punch but, alas, I had to decline due to a back injury. In hindsight, I should have accepted, despite my injury. The resulting action would have been funnier than anything I wrote for that esteemed magazine.
