ANR Mailbag: After 5 games/ PSG match/Bergkamp era

From Jay Chamberlin :

Judgment after only 5 games?

Like this year, last year, Arsenal was 5 pts behind the league-leaders, City

After 10, Arsenal was level on points.  20 games in, Arsenal was 2 points clear at the top, only to fall to third, behind Spurs, after 30 games.

Of course, at the end of the season, Arsenal finished 10 points behind Leicester.

It’s far too early to be judging these managers or their teams.

Nevertheless, it is worth noting that 3 of the top 4 at the end of the season were in the top 4 after 5 games.

Stick to your rule.  After 10, we’ll know more.

Myles says:

My other Golden Rule No1 (as you all know) is : This season is not last season.

Thanks for letting me know that about 5 games and 38 last season.

Leicester only lost three games , two to Arsenal. And Arsenal’s immature celebrations, after beating Leicester’s 10 men, provided vital fuel for the Foxes in the final weeks final title push.

From Fiona :Pep

Pep will “do a Leicester” ?? Hardly the same is it?

Thought PSG were terrific on Tuesday.

Still, it’s good to be so outplayed and nick a point isn’t it?

From David White : De Bruyne is the Bergkamp of his generation

Hi Myles,

Like you, I’m really enjoying watching Kevin De Bruyne.

For me, his resemblance to Dennis is quite striking.  He can see all the options, he can pick the right one, and has so much talent with his feet he can execute it.

Arguably, Bergkamp was the most important signing of the modern Arsenal era.

He shattered our preconception of what an Arsenal player could be.

Did he make everything that came after possible…?  I can still remember my mate telling me Bergkamp had signed for Arsenal.  And me thinking he was having me on of course, because that was never going to happen in a million years.

For me, Dennis was the stepping stone to the modern Arsenal era.  And for that remember, we have to thank Bruce Rioch.

Myles says:  David Dein got Bergkamp.
