From Baafuor, Ghana : Bang on!
God bless you Myles, for telling the truth.
I know most AKBs, still in denial and as deluded as Wenger himself, will slate you.
But don’t mind them.
From Sean: Wenger is digging his own grave!
Yup Myles,
The CEO was saying it is all down to the manager, and if anything goes wrong it is Wenger’s responsibility. I concur with you that they are allowing him to make so many mistakes, that he will call it quits himself.
Or are they assuming Wenger will call it quits? What if they are wrong?
In any case, I have decided not to take next season too seriously.
With such a bad start, Cesc and Nasri both gone and no replacements, we cannot go far whether we change the manager or not.
I admire Ferguson and the Special One, they do what it takes to win.
From Pez : But….
Fergie has been able to “pay” for his mistakes. Rooney, Ferdy, Yorke, Anderson, Ronaldo, Berba,Nani, Jones, Young, Carrick, ……all cost far more than Arsenal have ever spent on most of their players.
How can you compare…one company has billions and I mean billions at their disposal…the other…was owned by a diamond dealer that is sadly no longer with us…..and is now owned by an american and a russian who could if they wanted to BLOW everyone (except) man city out of the water.
Wenger has had a poor few years but dont compare…fergie has many many more advantages….equal footing….Wenger would win!
From Stan : Wenger
Hi Myles,
I don’t understand why people criticise Wenger for seeking and signing young talent from all over the world. This is the part of the job he gets right and Alex Ferguson has copied.
What you have so clearly identified as not right is the signing of mature warriors to form the backbone of the team.
Then the best of the youth will have to really compete to be first team and either raise their standards or go elsewhere.
Not sure what the future holds for Arsenal anymore, but I have hope that one or two signings could spark us back on the right path.
Someone ferocious with everthing to prove, maybe Ribery?
From Jason: Ferguson/Wenger
Hi Myles,
I do agree that the start to the season is pivotal and could result in Wenger’s position being reviewed.
However, I do think that he has now perhaps realised his failings and will hopefully now do something about it.
I think Gervinho is a good signing if it’s the start of a few signings that bring us more strength, pace and power – i.e. the old model for success !
A good leader at the back, and improved version of Song and another striker would see us look a lot better.
You’d also think he’d spend some of the Cesc money on Mata or someone similar.
I will reserve judgement clearly, but I think the club know they at an impasse and need to act. Let’s see.
From Stuart Law : I almost agree with you!!!
Why can’t he find us any more Ljungbergs / Flaminis / Gilbertos?
They don’t have to be English…and they can be bargains.
With a couple of no name, run-all-day merchants in the team, we’d improve a lot.
Fletcher and Park spring to mind.
Rather than the board letting AW hang himself (a favourite tactic of my own!).
I like to think every day AW is there, the foundations are kept stronger for the future – with young players and finances. I think they would be mad to get rid of him until they have a very good plan B…or they’ll be hanging themselves – they “sacked our best ever manager for this!!”
From Celtic bhoy : Good article, mate.
I’m a Celtic fan but often watch your league.
Jock Stein legacy is that other Scots have a backbone, seven Glasgow managers in your league.
Wenger has no backbone and is afraid to pay for good talent as he searches for the unknown.
And as for being gracious in defeat, he does not understand when to admit he’s wrong!!
How many bust-ups can the man have?
From N7 Gooner : Too far
Sorry, this article has gone too far in my eyes.
Alex Ferguson has had a constant flow of high income and Arsene Wenger has transformed the club for the future.
If it were down to some people, we’d still be playing at Highbury and not moving forwards.
In years to come we’ll all benefit.
Ironically, the stadium that has hampered Wenger’s reputation in recent times will grow to be his legacy to the club.
