Match-fixing to be revealed at Friday 2pm news conference

It’s all happening in Germany today.

I know nothing about this story till I picked up an email which Rob Hughes sent late last night.
Match-fixing! I wonder. I really wonder. Match-fixing is so hard to prove.

Fifteen arrest warrants have been issued. Police in Germany have arrested five men in Berlin, including a Croatian who was convicted of match-fixing in 2005. We do not know yet which European leagues the fixed matches were in, although Turkey is believed to be one.

The prosecutor in Bochum has a news conference at 2 pm today and Rob was on a plane at dawn to cover it for IHT/NYT. Rob’s email contains three expletives and that’s unusual. Rob never swears.

Talking of match-fixing, I had been wondering what was happening to Luciano Moggi, who masterminded a wholly disgraceful operation in Serie A.

Rome-based blogger Lincon Dexter brings that story up to date.
