Rome preview : appetite, defence,Xavi, Rooney

Sorry folks, I need more time to think about the climax of the football season, the biggest game of the year.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Messi and Cristiano, about power and pressing and appetite, about Barcelona and Man United.

On bank holiday Monday I didn’t want to know about Arsenal and I didn’t want to know about football but I DID want to know if he was fit. And there was a news black-out on that. “Is Rio Ferdinand fit?” I asked. He didn’t play at Hull.

I think Manchester United can beat Barcelona without Rio, but I really wanted to know whether he would be playing.

And I haven’t got this contest between champions straight in my mind yet.

That’s unsatisfactory- but at least it’s honest.

Today is Wednesday, the day I always take the phone off the hook and write. I switch off the net too.

At noon, or sooner, I’ll switch on my router and put up a preview of tonight’s Champions League Final in Rome.

I’m going to watch a video now. It’s a video I’ve seen many times but I want to see it again before I write a preview.
