€800,000 not €3m / Nick / Louise

ANR readers say I  boobed yesterday.

Prize money for a Group Stage win is 800,000 euros.

My mistake is the most spectacular Arsenal own-goal since Diaby’s header at Old Trafford.

I got an email from a  mate  and  posted  the info.

The figure seemed  a bit high but I trusted my mate. He’s normally a good numbers man.

Yes, I know, I know, I  should have checked that fact.

I’m responsible for everything that appears under my name, including the spelling and punctuation of our readers.

Unfortunately, a busy  old beatnik  would not know where to begin checking a fact like that.

But it’s still my blunder. In newspapers, you have a sub and a sports editor to pick up your mistakes.

Here, you don’t , so it’s been a  daily high-wire act  since 1998  and  I can fall off the trapeze at any moment, as I often do.

I don’t know that I’ve made a mistake until I get an email like this:

From Nick : 2.5m for a win

Hi Myles,

According to the very well respected Kicker magazine of Germany, a win is worth 800.000 Euros.

Still a lot of money though.

From Louise : Top of the table

Hello Myles,

I’m still an avid reader of your blog, usually over a cup of tea as a well-earned treat during my working day.

This weekend, I finally had to trip to Wigan that I enjoyed.

After the 0-2 to 3-2 turnaround 2 seasons ago and the disappointing draw last year, we enjoyed a win.

The Arsenal looked like a team both during and after the game.  All the players came to thank the fans, throwing their shirts into the crowd and finally Chesney orchestrated a sing along to “We love you Arsenal”.

Don’t get me wrong, last season I thought we could beat anyone when we put our first team out.   This season I hope we can beat most teams.   The difference this season is a bit more depth and a lot more determination across the whole team.

PS. Everyone says how good Spurs look. They have no depth, they don’t try in any games except in the league and they’ve been very lucky with decisions – hand balls, sending offs etc.   We will see what happens if they get any injuries.

When Wenger only concentrated on the league and the Champions League, you and many Gooners lambasted him.   Spurs are still trying to achieve what we have already done.

Myles says :

Every club needs supporters like you, Louise.

People like you are the lifeblood of English football. In these hysterical times, your   loyalty to your club is more important than it’s ever been.

Your loyalty to ANR is also commendable.

I’ll try not to disappoint you too often.
