Steve Poltz is a hard-travelling songwriter who tells a story about how one of his songs was written.
The song is called You Were Meant For Me and Part 1 is a wild story about where and when the song was written.
It reminds me of Paul Simon talking about songwriters having more interesting lives when they’re young, scrambling around, sleeping on floors. Later on, when they’re successful, they have less to write about, he reckoned. Paul said, “You can’t sing, ‘I have a big house.’ “
Part 2 is the first half of the song.
Part 3 is the second half of the song.
Murray Lachlan Young first came into my life when Jeff Dexter played me a cassette of his funny poems.
Then I met Murray when Jeff and I went to a Borderline book launch where a twangy surf band was playing & Murray was compering.
I love Is It Wrong To Wear The Thong and I really like Keith, Don’t Go.
But my favourite is still Simply Everyone’s Taking Cocaine.
Sometimes when I want to rock, I click on Absolutely Sweet Marie by Jason & The Scorchers.
Interviewed Jason for The Scotsman and he’s funny, passionate, very down-to-earth.
I’ve interviewed scores of American musicians over a 30-year period and he’s one of those I really, really liked. A great guy.
But that interview was long after the Scorchers broke up. Wish I’d seen them.
Jason said Steve Earle lived on the next farm, outside Nashville.
