From Richard Southwood : 4th of July
Hello Myles,
Hope you are enjoying your weekend.
I thought I’d take some time to share my best 4th of July memory…Bergkamp against Argentina.
I’m sure you remember it.
I watch it all the time, especially on the 4th, but here’s a video you may not have seen that tries to do justice to a player that simply defies categorization…as Martin Tyler himself explains, “We’re simply running out of superlatives…”.

As much as I agree with you about Wenger, it’s important to remember that Wenger himself set the bar so, so very high.
Bergkamp, Vieira, Petit, Overmars, Pires, Henry, Wright, Anelka, Adams/Keown/Dixon/Nutty/Seaman career extensions…Sol…Ze German…Freddie…
There are a tremendous amount of memories of which we should be thankful.
Brilliance doesn’t always beget success. Following Arsenal these days is elegiac. May the good times return…although I doubt that. We’ve been privy to some amazing footballers.
Good day and great success to you and yours!

Saturday I liked…. but too much tennis.
Today has no Wimbledon and this morning I’m listening to soulful Gene Clark’s No Other (1974) on Spotify as I type this.
Next weekend will be better, as Caroline’s coming home. She made me laugh when she was 4 and 14 and 24 and still does.
Superlatives got me into trouble in my first spell as a rock journalist in the Seventies.
After seeing one of the most thrilling and astounding gigs of all time, I phoned in 300 words to The Times’s copytaker about Stevie Wonder at the Rainbow.
I got a bollocking from arts editor John Higgins on that one.
John said, “If you use so many superlatives, people won’t believe it.”
USA 94 was four years before I became a blogger, so I didn’t have a chance to overuse superlatives when dynamic Dennis blasted that goal past Argentina.
Maximum power, maximum artistry.
I’m only exaggerating slightly when I say: Nobody who saw that goal will ever forget it.
That was a wondergoal and I’m a highlights kinda guy.
( I don’t give every day equal value because the highlights mean so much to me. )
