ANR Champions League correction

BASHING OUT a piece here ten minutes after the Champions League draw had taken place on Friday morning, I scored another own-goal when referring to clubs who had won the Champions League.

It didn’t feel right saying that Bayern had not won it since 1976, so I looked it up. And I still got it wrong.

Firstly, thanks so much for ANR – always a joy to read: Informative, insightful, interesting, controversial(!); your site is always my first port of call for all things Arsenal.

Just an editorial note on your Champions League piece: Bayern have won the competition 4 times (not 3), their last victory was in 2001.

Seasons greetings to you all and thanks again.
Best wishes,
Jimmy

I stand corrected. Thank you Jimmy – and Merry Xmas !

In the 2001 final at the San Siro, Bayern Munich and Valencia drew 1-1.

Both goals were penalties by Mendieta (3) and Effenberg(51). And then Bayern won 5-4 on penalties.

Reminds me of George Barton, one of my sports editors at The Scotsman. When I phoned in a correction George would growl and say, “Get it right first time !”
