Arsenal have signed Uruguayan international goalkeeper Fabian Carini on a one year loan from Juventus.
The 22-year-old – who played at the 2002 World Cup – could win a permanent move to Highbury, based on performances.
Wenger said: “I am delighted to have signed Fabian Carini on loan. He is a young international goalkeeper with outstanding natural ability and a great temperament.
“He will definitely strengthen our squad as we look forward to next season.”
Carini said: “I am delighted to be joining Arsenal, they are one of Europe’s great clubs, with many fantastic players. Hopefully I will impress the club and its supporters sufficiently, in order that I can extend my stay at Arsenal.”
An Australian wire service reported: Brazilian World Cup-winning midfielder Gilberto Silva transferred to England’s Arsenal for $14.7 million, his Brazilian club said today. [An international wire service should put Australian dollars here somewhere, otherwise it is potentially ambiguous – thanks to the readers who have pointed this out].
Atletico Mineiro said it would receive $12.86 million for the transfer, with $1.84 million going to the player, who left immediately for the Premier League champions after the deal was signed.
While a Chinese service, Xinhua said:”Gilberto Silva, a member of the Brazilian national team recently crowned champion at the World Cup, was transferred to England’s Arsenal for 8 million U.S. dollars, his Brazilian club announced on Thursday.
Atletico Mineiro said it would receive seven million dollars for the transfer with one million going to the player, who travelled immediately to London.”
One UK tabloid said Wenger was also seeking a loan deal for Parma playmaker and French international, Micoud.
