From John Roger: ‘Fergie’s time’ and summer hope
Dear Myles
So Fergie has finally called it a day!
While my respect for his achievements have grown over the years, I can’t say I’m sad to see him leave.
A fantastic manager, but his influence among the media, pundits and on refs had long ago become too big.
No one was brave enough to cross ‘Sir Alex’.
Interested to hear your thoughts on who comes next for MUFC Myles.
Mourinho’s posturing after the CL game make a lot more sense now, or do you think he’ll still go to Chelsea? Is he too big a personality for a club as big as Man Utd, where the ‘club always comes first’?
I know you’re a big fan of Moyes, but to me, he has got too used to playing quite negative football, and that style wouldn’t last long at OT.
Maybe with a more talented squad and bigger budget he could adapt.
Encouraging to hear noises about a big kit deal with Puma for the Gooners.
Along with the Emirates sponsorship and army of partners we seem to be announcing, we should be in a strong financial position.
Once again, I find myself torn between the desire to hope that the future we’ve been promised has finally arrived, and the fear that nothing will really change.
Will we clear out the deadwood and invest the new money properly? Or will we be fed 5 more years of Gervinhos, Parks and Squillacis? What do you think?
Maybe the transition at both Manchester clubs, the continued interference at Chelsea, and our stronger financial clout will combine to make us challengers again?
Or in ten years will psychologists be calling this perpetual state of hope, ‘Arsenal syndrome’?
Of course, I know what you’ll say. “With this manager at the helm, there’s nothing to say”.
We both know he’s not going anywhere this summer.
And yet I find myself…still hoping
Myles says:
After hope comes frustration and then – guess what – even more frustration.
When you stop hoping Arsenal will win a trophy, you’ll start to enjoy your life again.
With that big Puma deal, Kroenke will soon be taking more than £30,000 a week out of your club. Stan will soon be in a stronger financial position, so he will feel more comfortable.
Selling The Future by Professor Arsene Wenger will soon be a compulsory module on every university marketing course in the world.
