A late solo effort by Lacazette clinched Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Brentford.
And Eden Hazard scored a wondergoal to beat Klopperpool at Anfield.
At the Emirates, chunky teenager Emile Smith-Rowe made his first start against Brentford last night. Danny Welbeck headed in a wonderful cross by Guendouzi, then finished off a silky ensemble move to make it 2-1.
When Brentford’s Alan Judge flighted a free-kick over the wall, German keeper Leno couldn’t get anywhere near it.
Sub Lacazette wrapped the game up in 90+2 when he zipped past two defenders and drilled home a low shot.
Liverpool at Anfield are formidable, even in a game like this.
With the tie level at 1-1, sub Eden Hazard evaded three red shirts in the middle of the Liverpool half, followed his own pass wide to get the ball back, then skipped daintily into the penalty area and fired a phenomenal shot into the corner of the net to win the match.
Sarri’s Chelsea are playing my kind of football and it’s a shame they’re not in the Champions League.
Chelsea coach Gianfranco Zola said, “I think it was a fantastic goal. Not only for the beauty of it but also for the moment he scored it. He’s one of the best in Europe, and in the world. Eden is going fast, in the choices he’s making on the pitch. In my opinion we haven’t seen his best yet. He has an unbelievable potential. He’s getting to the point where he’s using it always at the right moment.”
I loved Zola’s comment.
And he is spot-on.
Seeing him reminded me of going once as a guest to Fratton Park, where I met Niall Quinn and Zola separately. I can’t remember who Portsmouth were playing but meeting the two nicest men in football on the same day was a fluke and a privilege.
The draw for Round 4 of the League Cup is on Sunday.
I hope Arsenal don’t get Chelsea.
