From Bert Wright : Quo Vadis Gooners
Myles,
I see one of your correspondents citing only three possible options for Arsenal and Wenger now:
1) win the league 2) buy the players we so obviously need or 3) resign!
He missed out what is by far the most likely option and that’s the probability that Wenger will carry on doing precisely what he’s been doing for the last six years ie buying cheap, persevering with mediocrities, shooting us a line of misplaced optimism that very few Gooners can even stand to hear any longer.
The truly astounding thing is that nobody seems interested in holding Wenger to account. The vulnerability of football managers’s jobs is legendary but like Ol’ Man River, Arsene just keeps rolling along.
He has the best job in sport; well-paid, no bosses to annoy him, unrelated to performance, no curiosity about strategy, free and clear in perpetuity.
The real questions for fans are: for how long are we prepared to endure this farce; how can we exert pressure for change; is there anybody at the club who gives a monkey’s; are we content to be decorative irrelevances forever? Answers on a post-card etc……
Myles replies :
The AKBs are hero-worshippers who love pretty football.
I’m not an AKB, more of a 3PS : Wenger will always be 3 Players Short.
That’s his modus operandi.
Make sure the team is 3 players short of what Arsenal need, sell fans the future, make a profit every year to keep his lucrative job as the king of the also-rans.
Will he prove me wrong this season?
What do you think?
PS. Quo Vadis is a Latin phrase meaning : Where are you going?
It’s also a restaurant in Dean Street where my first boss once took us on a day when he wasn’t lunching clients who might employ our small ad agency.
