From Raj : Lazio looking to sign Cafu
You like this Cafu chap don’t you?
I was briefly in the Ludogorets box at the Emirates, the club chairman (who loves to talk) addressed everyone in the box and thanked us for coming to the game.
He started talking very frankly, key points:
1. We play an attacking brand of football and we’d rather lose 6-0 playing it than draw by playing in a more boring style.
2. We have a bid on the table for 12m (probably €) for Cafu from Lazio, which we are considering.
3. We are looking to upgrade in the goalkeeping department
From David Evans : Uwe Seeler
Hi from Shanghai, Myles.
Haven’t been in touch for a while, but you mentioning Uwe Seeler brought back a couple of memories.
Even with his back to goal, he was so aware of where he was, where the goal was and, as importantly, where the keeper was. Think of that back-header over Peter Bonetti in the World Cup quarter final in 1970 against us… people said he was lucky, but he meant it.
I know because he scored an identical header for Hamburg against Cardiff in the semi final, second leg of the Cup Winners’ Cup two years earlier.
I didn’t move to London until 1971 and I was at that match at Ninian Park.
No pace – he looked about 60 – but a smart, stealthy player.
From Gerald Layu : Redmond and Ward-Prowse for England
Sorry about Spurs, Myles.
They seem to me to have a lot of energy but not enough invention.
On a more positive note, the Southampton pair of Redmond and Ward-Prowse should be in the next England squad. Good footballers, both. Southampton appear to have got it right again with Claude Puel.
The cameras caught a relaxed Roy Hodgson watching Southampton’s mature display against Inter yesterday. I hope Southgate was there too!
Myles says:
Cafu should come to London. Less racism.
Uwe Seeler also very good at overhead kicks.
I’m sure Southgate knows a lot more about Ward-Prowse than either of us, Gerald.
Like you, I’m very impressed by Claude.
