A week is a long time in politics and a day is a long time in football.
It was quite easy to take a day off blogging yesterday. I could say I was busy doing much more important things yesterday. And I was.
But I was silent on Thursday as a protest.
Someone ghastly came back into English football, someone I absolutely loathe and detest. I was surprised and dismayed to see that Swede-Goran Eriksson was suddenly everywhere on TV and in the papers.
“What a ghastly little man,” I thought. “I can’t believe he’s got the front to come back here ! I can’t believe he’s back in England, I’ll take the rest of the week off in protest.”
On Thursday, nothing happened at Arsenal. They didn’t sell anybody or buy anybody or play anybody.
On the net last night I read that Thierry Henry had said Arsenal can win the league, even without Adebayor. Watching him say that on TV this morning, he didn’t sound as if he believed it. And he didn’t look as if he believed it.
Wenger says we have to trust the players we have. That’s a good thing for any manager to believe. And it may be a good thing for any manager to say.
Right now, it’s still pre-season and still 22 days before Arsenal visit Everton. After that game, I’ll decide whether I trust the players we have.
For me, football is about players and matches and trophies. The players can be exciting and the matches can be exciting. Players win matches, and a series of matches can win a trophy.
That’s how I see it. All the rest is drivel and poppycock.
And sometimes I reckon that everything before Xmas is pre-season.
