Champions League: Spurs & Leicester show Arsenal how to do it

Clean sheets win games and I reckon Arsenal need one tonight.

Even before last night’s CL games, I felt that Arsenal could beat Basel by one goal.

Last Saturday Claudio Ranieri took Mahrez and Vardy off at half-time at OId Trafford and Jose Mourinho commented on that.

Last night Leicester played their first home match in the Champions League.

IN THEIR HISTORY.

An eagerly-awaited event at the King Power? You could say that.

Jinking Algerian winger Riyard Mahrez did a quick shuffle on the right flank and hit a swinging left-foot cross to the far post. The ball beat the head of Vardy but Slimani plunged forward to nod home from five yards.

Porto feared Slimani when he played for Sporting Lisbon because he often scored against them. He’s a centre forward they know well but can’t stop.

1-0 to Slimani in 25 minutes.

His goals have put Leicester close to the Round of 16 already.

Because Porto have lost 15 of their 17 games in England.

A very close-run match was probably what Ranieri expected.

Italian managers love a 1-0 and Antonio Conte needs a couple of those ASAP.

FC Copenhagen come to the King Power Stadium in three weeks time. Ominously, the Danish club stuffed Bruges 3-0 last night.

In Moscow, Dele Alli smacked a 20-yarder against the crossbar in the 35th minute.

Before that I was wondering: Is Eriksen on the pitch?.

Then Aldeweireld sent a probing pass straight forward from the halfway line and the sharp Lamela found Son just onside in the box while the CSKA back line was just outside it.

The South Korean’s sidefoot shot was powderpuff but squeezed under Akinfeev’s left arm and rolled over the line for the only goal of the game in 71.

I knew Spurs wouldn’t win at Wembley on Matchday 1. But hoped they’d get something in Moscow.
