Irish keeper Michael McGovern made three good saves in the first 20.

When Gotze hit a good chance wide of the post his miss put an expression of intense dismay on the face of his manager Jogi Low.

In 27 Muller’s diving header hit the post and rebounded almost as far as the corner flag. But Gomez had been ruled offside.

Two minutes  later the goal arrived after slick play in the box: Ozil to Gomez, first time into Muller’s run, Muller cutely nudged the ball back for Gomez to knock in from 10 yards.

Germany 1-0 up after 29 minutes.

The game was a siege now and half-time looked too far away for the Irish.

But the break arrived without further score.

Co-commentator Gerry Armstrong , the hero of the 1982 World Cup in Spain, suggested that Michael O’Neill might go 3-5-2 in the second half.

Substitutions in the second half didn’t change the score.

Afterwards Lineker asked Jens Lehmann to sum up Germany’s performance.

“It’s not as fluent as it was, ” said Jens. “There seems to be a lack of power and energy on the pitch.”

Jens also praised Man of the Match Michael McGovern, the Irish keeper. “He kept them in the game a couple of times. He’s a free agent? Can he speak German?”

Comparing England and Germany, Lehmann said,”The English look quite fast.We don’t.”

PS Just remembered being interviewed by ZDF about Lehmann.

In my back garden by three girls who arrived in a taxi.

And they sent me the video.
